While They're Away
by C. Scott Davis

It's so quiet.

They're off, doing what they do - what has to be done, and I wait here, as I have for 900 years, as I always will.

I miss his voice, his gentle touch, her laughter. The new one too. I like him. He is also one of mine now.

I can't help them out there.

But when they return, they may need to flee, or give chase, or simply move on. And that's where I come in.

After the danger has passed, they will joke and laugh and flirt, and it will be glorious.

I love them all.

A Job Well Done
by C. Scott Davis

"You got them all?" Rose asked, "You're sure?"

"Yes." Strange voice. Distorted.

"What about in the bedroom?" She glanced back down the hall, "Did you get the ones in the bedroom?"

"Yes."

"There was one in my shoe," Rose said, making a face, "I almost stepped on it."

"They. are. all. ex-ter-mina-ted."

"Good," Rose said, looking over the bill, "And if they show up again?"

"There. is. a. six. month. guar-an-tee." Same odd inflection. "If. you. see. more. ver-min. call. us."

"Thanks," Rose nodded and handed over a cheque, "Hopefully I won't have to."

"Thank. you. for. us-ing. Da-lek Ex-ter-mina-tors."

Into the Light
by C. Scott Davis

It feels different this time.

Then again, it's always different. Eight times before this, and never the same.

The last time was the worst. Too horrible to think about. So much pain, so much loneliness.

This time though, I'm not alone. She's here.

I hope I explained it well enough. I tried to prepare her, but I'm not sure.

She's shaking, obviously frightened. I want to tell her it'll be okay, but I can't speak. It's too close.

I can feel the change, burning through me, flooding out of me.

I close my eyes, and surrender to the fiery embrace.

One More Last Time
by C. Scott Davis

The Doctor looked down at the teeming mass of humanity, crawling across the face of their tiny world. They were in trouble again, facing some threat or another, seconds away from destruction.

Weren't they always?

He'd seen them like this, and saved them, more times than he could count. Sometimes there hardly seemed to be any point. After all, they always ended up right back in peril again.

From the ancient past to the far distant future, their history was written in the spaces between one disaster and the next.

Of course, he went down and saved them again anyway.

Challenge 77: Lucky

Title: Close Call
Author: C. Scott Davis
Challenge: Lucky
Characters: Rose Tyler (alternate universe)

Close Call
by C. Scott Davis

Rose Tyler knew how lucky she was.

Everyone was talking about the explosion. She hadn’t been there, hadn’t seen it, but it was frightening to realise that she’d very nearly been right in the middle of it.

If she had taken the lottery money down to Wilson, like she usually did...

She didn't know why exactly she'd decided to slip away a few minutes early on this particular day, but she had, and it had probably saved her life.

Her future stretched out before her now, completely unwritten.

The funny thing was though, she didn't feel lucky at all.

Challenge 78: Wounded

An Unwilling Survivor
by C. Scott Davis

The Doctor dragged himself towards the TARDIS.

The pain threatened to overwhelm him. Not just the physical pain, although there was quite a lot of that, but the other, deeper pain.

It was gone. His planet, his people, ripped mercilessly out of Time. He'd had to witness it all, and worse, survive it.

Not for long though. Soon it would be over. There was no way he could regenerate from this.

He fell into the TARDIS. It was fitting he should die here. They'd been through so much together.

Then, the impossible.

"NO! Not this time... Please..."

Change, renewal, regeneration.

Challenge 79: Peace

The Reason, the Cost
by C. Scott Davis

The Doctor stared across the scorched surface of the world.

It looked deceptively peaceful, but the acrid smell told the truth of it. Nothing lived here now. There was no living thing on the entire planet, except for the Doctor.

The grit in the dry air burned his eyes, and he rubbed them absently, before going back inside the TARDIS and closing the door.

He wasn't sure why he kept coming back here. Maybe it was just to remind him, to make sure he never forgot.

It was important that he never forgot.

This was what happened when he failed.

Challenge 80: Sweet/Sour

Title: From Triumph to Ashes
Author: C. Scott Davis
Challenge: Sweet/Sour
Characters: The Master
Shippiness: None
Rating: U (Universal, suitable for all)

From Triumph to Ashes
by C. Scott Davis

It had been delicious.

There was nothing the Master enjoyed more than setting a trap for the Doctor, and then watching as he stumbled his way through every turn.

He could've killed the other Time Lord more than once, or at least cost him a few of his remaining regenerations, but that wouldn't get him what he really wanted.

He didn't want the Doctor dead. He wanted him defeated, beaten. He wanted to prove him wrong... make him pay...

And one day it would happen.

But not today.

The Master frowned as he fled, hating the taste of it.

Challenge 81: Robin Hood

Title: A Matter of Perspective
Author: C. Scott Davis
Challenge: Robin Hood
Characters: 7th Doctor, Ace
Shippiness: None
Rating: U (Universal, suitable for all)
Spoilers: none
Words: 100 (excluding title)

A Matter of Perspective
by C. Scott Davis

"Most cultures have stories of a noble thief," the Doctor said, "Robin Hood, Zorro, Gowlopp..."

"Gowlopp?" Ace asked.

"Famous historical figure on Palustria 4. Supposedly slurped up slime from the wealthiest Palustrians, and spat it back out onto the poor and dry."

"No way, Professor," Ace accused with a grin, "You're making this up!"

The Doctor shook his head. "Gowlopp was a great hero."

"A hero?" Ace asked, looking doubtful, "for spitting slime on poor people?"

"Well," the Doctor replied, "You have to understand that Palustria 4 is a marsh planet, and that their economy is very complex... and moist."

Challenge 82: Elvis

Title: But Not Graceland
Author: C. Scott Davis
Challenge: Elvis
Characters: Tegan Jovanka, her friend Janice
Shippiness: None
Rating: U (Universal, suitable for all)

Words: 100 (excluding title)

But Not Graceland
by C. Scott Davis

"And you really met him?" Janice's excitement caused her American accent to become more pronounced.

Tegan smiled at her friend's enthusiasm. Janice was the only person who seemed to almost believe all of her crazy stories about her time with the Doctor.

"Well, not exactly, but I thought so at the time. We didn't find out until later that he was actually a robot."

"A robot?" Janice looked confused.

"Yeah. The real King John was in London, but we didn't know that then."

"Oh..." Janice's face fell.

"What?"

"It's just... I thought when you said you met The King... "

Challenge 83: Sherlock Holmes

Title: The Man He Used to Be

The Man He Used to Be
by C. Scott Davis

"You wore all of these?" Rose asked.

"Not all of them, no."

"This one?" she asked, holding up a bulky fur coat.

The Doctor nodded. "Lots of pockets."

"And the opera cloak?"

"I borrowed that one. Always meant to return it..."

"Please tell me you never wore this." Rose held up a brightly coloured, patchwork coat.

"It was a phase."

"Hey! I've seen a cap like this before."

"Sherlock Holmes."

"You used to wear it?"

"For a time."

"It doesn't really suit you," she said, placing it back with the rest.

"I guess not," he said, "Not any more anyway."
