"Linda! You won’t BELIEVE this!" Patty exclaimed, rushing into Trudy’s as the lunch rush was ending.

"What is it?" Linda asked, as the blonde took a stool at the counter. "Let me get you a soda while you catch your breath."

Patty gulped down half the Pepsi-Cola as soon as Linda placed it in front of her. "Whew, thanks! I needed that… I’ve been running since I got off the subway."

"It’s nothing serious… Your mother’s okay?" Linda asked.

"Momma? Yeah, sure!" Patty answered. "It’s nothing like that." Patty had something in her lap, and as she picked the object up it was clear it was a magazine of some sort. "Linda, you’re in this month’s Photoplay!"

"Wha…?" Linda began.

"Yes!" Patty continued excitedly, placing the magazine on the counter and hurriedly flipping through pages. "You and Roddy—when you were in California! Look!"

Patty slid the periodical across the counter toward Linda, who gasped when she saw the photo spread. There were nearly a dozen pictures from their big night out at the Cocoanut Grove. Some showed them sitting at their table—including a couple shots of Linda with her hand on Roddy’s upper thigh, leaning over, kissing him passionately. There were photos of them in each other’s arms on the dance floor—some with Roddy spinning Linda so that her full skirt fanned out around her, showing off her legs, and others showing them pressed together, their hands clutching each other tightly.

"Oh, my!" was all Linda could say. Her mind and her senses were flooded with memories of that night. We thought we were so free… away from the ever-watchful eyes of Roddy’s mother. We didn’t even notice any photographers, but I suppose we should have expected them…

"You two sure look like you were having a good time!" Patty giggled, and popped a bubble with her gum. "I can’t believe it’s MY friend Linda… in a gossip magazine! Wow!"

"What’ve you got there, Linda?" Sally asked as she hurried by to drop off an order. Once she’d finished she leaned over to have a look. "Wow, Linda! Is that you?" she asked.

"Uh, yeah… guess so," Linda admitted. "I didn’t realize photographers were there… Roddy and I just thought we were having a night out on the town…"

Patty cleared her throat, picking up the magazine. "Listen to this! ’Our sources reveal that the young woman accompanying former child star Roddy McDowall on a recent night at Hollywood’s famous Cocoanut Grove restaurant is Linda Jacobs, a waitress from New York. We’d heard young McDowall had gone to the Big Apple to pursue a stage career, but this type of ‘acting’ is new to our readers. Lassie and Flicka’s young master has certainly grown up…’ Linda! They even know your NAME!"

"Let me see that!" Linda demanded, grabbing the magazine from Patty’s hand. She scanned the rest of the copy and photos, a frown forming. "What will Roddy say?" she wondered aloud. "Or his mother…? And mine?"
