Rite of Passage

"Squeeze the trigger slowly; don't jerk it."

The boy took a deep breath and clenched his eyes shut.

"Don't close your eyes," his father scolded gently.

The boy nervously opened his eyes, trying not to let his father see that his hands were shaking.

"Take your time. Just keep your eyes on the target, and wait for a clear shot."

After a moment he fired, sending a massive bolt of energy from the ship.

"Great shot, son!" his father beamed, warmly clasping his shoulder.

The boy smiled, basking in his father's pride, as the small blue-green planet exploded into space.
