Catching the barely perceptible surge of panic in the surgeon’s eyes as he reaches for the scalpel, Saul feels the words before hearing them: “Get him out of here!”

Departing, the dreaded question follows him, is yelled out, the surgeon paused, blood from his scalpel joining the river on the surgical floor: “Which one?”

“Saul,” Paulette sobs hysterically, “how could you? Why? You’ve killed your son!”

“My darling,” climbing into the hospital bed with her, Saul cradles his exhausted wife, “it is precisely because he was my son, and more than anyone, I know the choice that he’d have made.”
