No one expected the engine blade to let loose.
Travis just happened to be standing before the jet's turbine when it sheared. There was a deafening whine, several rapid-fire plinks...followed by a sickening wet thud. Then, silence.
The shift supervisor was first to investigate. He immediately ordered the other mechanics away--to retrieve medical supplies, to call 911. There's no sense involving them, he thought, in something they can never un-see.
For, rounding the aircraft's nose, he'd seen a slight movement; a red, pulpy mass in the snow. It could be only one thing.
