“Want to know an interesting fact?” I say.
“Sure!” she replies.
“You know those squeaky toys for dogs and cats and that sound they make?”
She nods.
“That’s the sound a dying animal makes when it’s being killed. That’s why dogs and cats love those squeaky toys.”
“That doesn’t make any sense,” Ms. Believer-In-the-Gentleness-Of-Nature snorts. “Who told you that?”
“It’s true!” I insist.
“Then explain to me why it is that toys for human babies make that same exact sound? Why do they like it?”
My immediate response loaded, I pause thoughtfully. Does she REALLY want me to answer that?
