Miriam raised her hand. Mr. Gouch waited, but Miriam's classmates sat still. They were trying to avoid eye contact, while she was trying to force it. He was reluctant to call on her. She rarely understood the question, yet always had an answer. As he waited, Miriam began to wave her arm frantically. With a sigh, he called on her. She proudly exclaimed, “Impossible!” He raised an eyebrow. “Would you care to explain your answer?” Miriam smiled. “You can’t draw a conclusion. A conclusion is a thought and thoughts are invisible. The answer is impossible.” Impossible indeed, thought Mr. Gouch.
