What possessed me to come back to the Dungeon of Doom?

Oh, right. The Amulet of Yendor -- the thing that always brings me back.

I need supplies, but of course the shopkeeper won't let me in, unless I leave my pickaxe outside. Fortunately my dog knows what to do, and soon I have a small cache of potions and scrolls that should help me... once I figure out what they do.

I reward my dog with a treat, while the shopkeeper scowls at me, suspicious, but not sure what I've actually done. I smile and walk away.
