"I can't see."
"Give yourself some time to adjust."
My new eyes are working, but my brain can't seem to make any sense of the data. I can feel and hear, but without vision, the rest doesn't matter. All of the billions spent and my terrible sacrifice will have been for nothing.
Then I notice points of light, and I suddenly realise what I'm seeing.
"Stars!"
As the voices cheer, the images resolve themselves and I become aware of sizes, distances and spatial relationships.
We're going to the stars! And, as pilot and ship, I'm going to take us there.
