Drabble Challenge #35

Prompt: anniversary

I sat in the half-empty auditorium, watching a small boy pester his mother with questions that she couldn't safely answer.

60 years ago, the spaceships appeared in the sky and we were told that they were "taking over, for our own good". Every nation with a military fought back, but we were outmatched.

As long as we strictly obeyed every regulation, our "Benefactors", as they called themselves, otherwise ignored us. So every year, we gathered in small groups to silently observe this day that we can't even talk about.

Why commemorate a war we lost?... Next time, we won't lose.
