She lay silently in bed, covers pulled up over her ears, staring intently at the crack of light seeping under her bedroom door.
The light meant that her parents hadn't gone to bed yet, and as long as they were up, she was safe.
Too soon though, the crack went dark.
"Not tonight..." she whispered frantically. Even as she spoke, the floorboards creaked, as a dark shape took form beside her bed and red eyes glared down at her from above a mouth filled with rows of shark-like teeth.
She smiled a sigh of relief.
It was just a monster.
