Drabble Challenge #95 [Alternate]

Prompt: machine

Deep in the bowels of the buildings of the Universal Zetetic Society, Richard Morgan stood on the mezzanine and watch as Lady Elizabeth Blount’s followers carefully tended the miraculous machines.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said as he listened to the prayers issuing from the hundreds and hundreds of machines.

“We can thank Edison,” Lady Blount said. “It’s because of him we have the same prayer being said over and over from 2,555 machines 168 times daily.”

“And it works?” Morgan asked.

“Yes,” Lady Blount replied. “Apparently God craves consistency and volume.”

Eying her prayer-factory, she said, “Soon, the plagues will start.”
