Drabble Challenge #33

Prompt: buried treasure

Thought we’d found a buried treasure, you and I
The chance for love we each feared we’d never have
I gave up everything—I think you did too
In pursuit of that elusive life of our dreams

We began with such naïve hope and enthusiasm
But the stuff that dreams are made of is hard to grasp
It flutters around our heads and hearts
Often close, yet it remains out of reach

Although we both tried all we knew to unearth it
Each new attempt bringing us renewed hope
The treasure remains unreachable
The precious treasure of ‘Us’ still buried
