He starts nodding off, then catches himself.
“No, I can’t fall asleep,” he whispers. The avalanche left little shelter from the weather. “It’s so cold I’ll freeze to death.”
He starts to shake uncontrollably, the hypothermia slowly sapping the energy he has left. His eyes start to close again. This time there’s no stopping them.
As he drifts off to his demise he mumbles, “So cold…so cold…”
Suddenly he sits upright, fully awake. The sand and blazing heat of the desert are all he can see as far as the horizon.
“I must have been dreaming again,” he says.
