“Got a present for you.”
Lukey tosses something emphatically before me. His expression is triumphant, guilty, yet defiant. Lukey loves me without bounds--but his loyalty far exceeds his comprehension.
For several eternal seconds, I stare into the gruesome trophy. This won’t bring her back. Just another tragedy; a “punishment” that changes nothing. Still...seeing simple-minded Lukey die for this transgression seems as senseless as what he, himself, has done.
It has to end somewhere.
I bury the ear. I can’t say that I’ve buried Gracie with it...but the two are forever, inextricably, linked.
May they both have peace.
