Drabble Challenge #42

Prompt: key

"I need a copy of this." I slid my house key off the ring and handed it to the kid.

"Just one?"

"Just one."

He turned to his machine and began to grind out a mate to my key. A key that I would hand to her later that night. A key that meant I had a mate.

"Are you sure you just want one?" He asked again. "They're on sale this week."

"Yes, just one." My words stuck in my throat. Just one. They taunted me.

"You know what?" I interrupted him. "Better give me two--just in case."
