Drabble Challenge #80 [Alternate]

Prompt: blood

We never imagined war would come to the place we’d made our home
But this has been disputed land for centuries, so we should’ve expected it
It happened in other places, but was so outside our peaceful reality
Until the day we heard the sounds of battle and bloodshed
I wanted to fight beside the men I had pledged my life and love to
But they convinced me to hide with our children, to protect them
I thought I could do that, I thought it would be enough
In the end though, it wasn’t, and the soldiers found us all
