“I told you,” Goodie said, speaking close to Armie’s ear as they drove North along the trade route. “Those men are bad and Avarice knows it too.”
“They’re trappers and hunters,” Armie said. “That’s how they look.”
“They stare at Mary Swansea wrong,” Goodie said as the guides rode past the Swansea’s wagon on their horses.
“She’s pretty, everybody looks at her,” Armie said.
“You look at her like you want to say nice things and maybe kiss her,” Goodie said. “They stare hungry at her, like she’s one of momma’s pies. Keep Daddy’s pistol loaded and your knife sharp.”
