Pol raced far ahead of the search party, following the ridgeline upwards, praying that he find Cas first. Despite knowing where it should be, precious minutes fled before he found the hidden cleft that led up to their mountain pool. Being careful to leave no tracks, he climbed the trail.
As he made the last turn before coming up on the waterfall that fell into their pool, he found Cas sitting on a boulder, a wolf laying at his feet.
Cas spied him and pointed at the wolf. “It’s not my fault,” he said, his heart breaking. “She chose me.”
